Frozen-Reflection Application: Colborn Hagen

Personality:
Col is very aloof. He's not often interested in socialising or meeting new people. Despite his easy-on-the-eye appearance, he's not charming, he's not friendly. Col won't save a damsel in distress. He will however liberate them of their possessions? Still, if you do manage to crack through Col's hard shell, you'll find a complex personality. Wild mood swings make him a difficult friend, so it's wiser to not take him too seriously. It takes a level head to befriend Col and a patient character. If you prove yourself to be a reliable companion, then Col might drink with you. This often draws out his softer side (there's a soft side!?) where you'll find someone willing to listen and actually willing to share himself. You might find out more about him, but the truth isn't pretty. It's broken.
History:
Col had a loving mother and a loving father, except his family were cast out. Steeped in debt for reasons unknown to Col (even today) they had to pay it back somehow... so Col's father got involved in some shifty business. It paid well, so they brought up Col in a nice home with nice things, but of course the criminal path had its consequences. Col's mother grew increasingly depressed, losing all her friends, and the family moved about the kingdom a lot. Col wasn't a smart kid nor did he have many friends, so he went largely unnoticed, but his parents (despite everything) tried their best for him and cherished him dearly.
One day, Col's mother befriended a man. He only became significant in Col's life when suddenly his mother left, and this man was the reason why. Now Col had two dads, and life became that much more complicated. His visits to his father became less and less frequent. Col's mother remarried (illegally) and her new partner hated Col's father from the get-go. When access to his son was limited, Col's father was furious, threatening to reveal himself as Col's mother's real husband to a community where bigamy was considered disgusting.
Weeks later, Col's father went missing. He was never found and thus presumed dead.
This devastated Col, but his mourning went unrelieved. His mother adopted a new coldness he'd never experienced before, and his step-father simply said he was better off without that "miscreant of a father." Col became withdrawn and dropped out of school early.
At the age of sixteen, Col's family had moved nearer to the town square and he met somebody while working as a newspaper boy; a young aristocrat. They quickly became friends and after a few months, something more. It confused Col at first, they had obvious differences and strange similarities. But he believed the universe had conspired for this to happen, because it was so rare and special and that void inside was finally filled.
It was nearly a year into their relationship and they decided to tell their parents separately. They planned to meet the next day in the woods. Col wasn't sure about his step-father's reaction. His mother had returned to him however and was sure her golden heart could cast a glow on his love that even his step-father could learn to see. But Col's idealism proved catastrophic.
His step-father was seething with disappointment. He would never approve of Col's lover and his wife's opinion was small and unheard. Taking Col to the chapel, he hoped his step-son could be helped. Nothing good came of it and the gap in Col's life reopened. Dark and twisted. It solidified there when Col sneaked out the next day to the woods, and found himself alone.
This began a dark chapter in Col's life and it's yet to close. He's been thieving for years and living an unsavoury lifestyle. Col has no permanent home, often mooching off friends, staying at the inn or just living in the woods. Alone.

Likes: the tavern, night, music, big hearty meals, dry weather, smoking cigarettes, motherly personalities, being ignored by people...
Dislikes: deep conversations, aristocrats, nobles, the Royal family; anyone richer than him (which is nearly everybody anway) flooziness, new shoes, reading, religion...
